If you experience dental anxiety, you are not alone. Many adults have a fear of the dentist, which can keep them from getting the dental work done that they need to achieve and maintain a healthy smile. This is why the team at Aesthetic Dentistry of Georgetown is excited to offer patients a solution with sedation dentistry. Georgetown, TX area patients can relax in the dental chair and get dental work completed without fears and anxieties.
What about sleep dentistry?
At Aesthetic Dentistry of Georgetown, we do not offer sleep dentistry. Sleep dentistry and sedation dentistry are not one in the same. Sleep dentistry is the use of general anesthesia, administered by an anesthesiologist. This carries unnecessary risks to our patients and increases the chances of adverse reactions. Instead, we utilize oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide sedation, during which patients remain awake and coherent during their entire procedure.
What types of sedation are available?
There are two methods of sedation available with Drs. Mark Duncan and Mandy Holley. They include:
- Nitrous oxide sedation – also referred to as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide sedation is a popular option for many of our patients. This is because it provides a feeling of calm almost immediately. Nitrous oxide is administered through the nose during treatments and can also reduce discomfort. It is best for patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety.
- Oral conscious sedation – oral conscious sedation is the use of a medication that is taken orally approximately one hour before the appointment. Patients need to arrange transportation while this medication is in their system. After the procedure is complete, patients go home to rest and will awaken with little to no memory of their appointment—but a more beautiful smile!
