Sedation dentistry is very different from sleep dentistry, and there are a variety of reasons we do not offer sleep dentistry at our office.
Sleep dentistry is the term dentists use for putting a patient under general anesthesia during his or her dental procedure. Under general anesthesia, the patient falls asleep and remains unconscious during the procedure and some time after it is complete. It requires that a certified anesthesiologist administer the anesthesia and monitor the patient while he or she is unconscious.
We do not use sleep dentistry for our patients because we feel that it is unnecessarily dangerous in most situations. Patients are unable to respond at all during procedures and could experience adverse reactions to such a strong sedative in their systems.
