What are the Benefits of Dentures?

Dentures don’t just fill the gap in your smile left by missing teeth. They also restore health and function to your whole mouth, with specific benefits including:

  • Clearer speech
  • Improved chewing ability
  • Better support for facial features and remaining natural teeth
  • Renewed confidence and self-assurance

Our doctors use advanced techniques that allow a better fit and function and reverse the sunken-in appearance that is so often seen following tooth loss. Not only can this take years off of your appearance, it can restore poise, improve self-esteem, and allow you to feel comfortable no matter what your day brings.

During your free consultation at our Georgetown office, we will happily discuss these benefits in greater detail to help you understand just how impactful a restored smile can be.

Our Denture Options:

Whether you need a complete replacement or a partial denture to replace just a few missingteeth, Dr. Mandy, Dr. Mark and Dr. Devin use the most progressive labs and materials to provide you a customized prosthesis designed to look just like natural teeth.

Our dentists offer three different types:

  • Conventional: These rest on the gum tissue and are usually supported by adhesives.
  • Snap-on: These are supported by dental implants and are removable by the patient.
  • Screw-retained: These are also implant supported, but they can only be removed by the dentist.

By anchoring the denture with dental implants, it will also feel like natural teeth and stay put inside of the mouth, allowing you to eat, talk, and laugh without worry. A key advantage of implant-supported dentures is stimulation of your jaw bone. By preventing the bone loss that occurs after losing a tooth, implants keep the other teeth from shifting in your mouth, further preserving the look and function of your teeth and entire face.

Personalized Denture Treatment Planning:

No two mouths are the same, so our dentists create dentures that are custom designed for each individual’s unique needs. Combining advanced experience with the latest techniques and technology, Drs. Mandy, Mark, and Devin also personalize treatment through:

  • Sessions with a TENS (transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation) unit to relax muscles and help you maintain optimal physiological position and fit
  • Golden proportion calipers to ensure a more aesthetic, natural-looking smile that eliminates the sunken-in look – some patients even experience a “facelift” effect
  • Careful evaluation and patient communication before dentures are fabricated to keep post-delivery adjustments to a minimum.

Are there any risks involved?

There are few risks involved in the treatment process itself. The primary risks come after they have been made and are worn on a daily basis. It is necessary to take excellent care of your dentures every day, otherwise they may develop a biofilm that can harbor dangerous bacteria like staphylococcus aureus.

How should I prepare?

Depending on your situation, your dentist may schedule pre-denture treatments such as tooth extractions. At your consultation visit, our team is happy to answer questions and will provide you with the information you need to prepare for your recovery period after any necessary treatments and after your insertion.

Are dentures painful in any way?

New dentures can be uncomfortable for a few weeks as the gums, tongue, and muscles of the mouth get used to the appliance. Once you are used to them, though, you should not have pain. If you do at some point, it could be that they need to be adjusted. Sometime, pain may stem from debris getting beneath the denture and rubbing the gums.

Finally, people who wear dentures get a yeast infection, better known as thrush. Issues with debris and infection can be avoided by removing and cleaning them every day as recommended by your dentist.

How do I maintain and take care of my dentures?

Taking care of your dentures is as important as taking care of natural teeth. To maintain them, you should:

  • Handle with care: Dentures are easily damaged if dropped or left where children or animals may find them. When removing dentures for cleaning, it is helpful to place a towel over the sink in case they are accidentally dropped.
  • Remove and rinse after meals: This helps dislodge debris that could cause odor or discomfort.
  • Clean and soak dentures every day: It is easiest to place them into a glass of water or denture cleanser before going to bed. If a denture cleanser is used, always rinse the dentures before inserting into the mouth.
  • Brush dentures daily using a soft toothbrush and approved denture cleaner. Remember to do this over a towel in case the dentures drop.
  • Take good care of your gums, too! Without natural teeth, there is no reason to floss to maintain healthy gums. Instead, you can brush your gums gently using nonabrasive toothpaste. Doing so helps prevent bacteria and plaque that could degrade the gum tissue and affect the way your dentures fit.
  • See your dentist: Regular dental checkups remain important even when you have dentures. These visits may involve a thorough examination of the dentures and will also observe your gums and oral tissue for signs of gingivitis or other infection.
