Are dental implants permanent?

Smiling girl in hat When missing teeth call for long-lasting, dependable restorations, many patients turn to the benefits of dental implants. Dental implants are the perfect option for patients who need to replace missing teeth to restore the function, appearance, and health of the smile for the upcoming years. But many patients will ask the team at Aesthetic Dentistry of Georgetown in Texas if dental implants are a permanent option.

Are dental implants permanent?

For many of our patients, dental implants can be a long-term solution for missing teeth. They have better longevity than any alternative tooth replacement option available, including dentures and bridges. When patients take good care of their smiles, they may never need to repair or replace the implant itself. Some patients enjoy their dental implants for the rest of their lives when they work regularly with dentists to maintain their oral health.

What are dental implants?

There are three parts to a dental implant, including the fixture itself, the abutment, and the restoration. The fixture is a small titanium metal post that is placed during oral surgery into the jawbone. The abutment is the connector that goes on the top of the implant and allows the dentist to attach replacement teeth. These restorations may be dentures, crowns, or bridges. The restorations are the only part of the dental implant that can be seen after the procedure is completed, and these may need replacement if they crack or break. Otherwise, the implant itself is fused to the jawbone underneath. If patients do not develop further dental problems such as periodontal disease, they will enjoy the placement of this implant for life. Longevity of this restoration makes it a wonderful investment for many patients who need to repair the smile following tooth loss.
