The first step in TMJ treatment is to come in for a full examination by Dr. Holley or Dr. Duncan. Using the results of your diagnostic testing and the information gathered from a physical exam, they can determine how to best treat your TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). Treatment can range from mild medication and self-care to determining how your bite needs to be adjusted to allow your jaw to properly align and relax in the correct position.
Once the correct positioning is determined, an 'orthotic,' or bite positioner, can be used to adjust your bite. The orthotic will relieve you of your symptoms, and if needed, permanent restorations or orthodontic treatment can then be used to correct your TMD.
During your orthotic treatment period, symptoms can also be relieved using Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) therapy. TENS therapy uses electrodes emitting low electrical currents that soothe the painful muscles. Relief from symptoms usually begins within 30 minutes of TENS treatment.
